Healing Childhood Wounds: Finding Yourself After Years of Feeling Lost

By Natalia Salam, Clinical Psychologist · 2026-10-23

Many adults carry hurts from childhood without connecting them to what they feel today. Constant self-doubt, fear of being alone, difficulty trusting others or a sense of not knowing who you are can all have roots in early experiences.

How old wounds show up

Being very hard on yourself, struggling to make decisions, strong reactions to criticism, people-pleasing, or feeling emotionally drained for reasons you cannot explain.

Understanding is the first step

You do not need to blame anyone to heal. The aim is to understand why you learned to cope the way you did, so you can choose differently now.

What a client told us

One client wrote to Natalia: "I was exhausted, broken and my whole personality was shattered when I first contacted you... I learn how to accept my emotions without being dominated by them... Also, I have found peace with myself that I lacked before." Another shared: "I used to see everything through pain, but now I see beauty and meaning, even in my past traumas. They don't just hurt anymore, they've become lessons." Each person's experience is different, and results vary.

What therapy offers

A safe, non-judging space to look at the past at a pace you can handle. Approaches such as CBT, trauma-focused work and Time Line Therapy can help you loosen the hold old experiences have on the present.

When to reach out

If you feel stuck in patterns you cannot explain, or old pain keeps coming back, speaking with a psychologist can bring relief and clarity. This article is general information, not a diagnosis.
