Signs of Anxiety: What It Looks Like Beyond 'Feeling Nervous'

By Natalia Salam, Clinical Psychologist · 2026-10-27

Many people expect anxiety to look like visible panic. For a lot of people it is quieter: constant tension, a mind that won't switch off, or avoiding things without quite knowing why.

Emotional signs

Persistent worry that is hard to control, irritability, feeling on edge, a sense that something bad is about to happen, or difficulty concentrating.

Physical signs

A racing heart, tight chest, shallow breathing, stomach trouble, muscle tension, headaches, trouble falling or staying asleep, and constant tiredness.

Behavioural signs

Avoiding situations, seeking constant reassurance, procrastinating, over-preparing, or struggling to make decisions.

What can help

Anxiety responds well to structured approaches such as CBT, which helps you understand your triggers and build skills to interrupt the cycle. Regular sleep, movement and reducing caffeine also make a real difference.

When to seek help

If these signs are lasting for weeks, or getting in the way of your daily life, a consultation with a clinical psychologist is a good next step. This article is general information, not a diagnosis.
