Is Online Therapy Effective? What to Expect from Video Sessions
By Natalia Salam, Clinical Psychologist · 2026-10-23
Online therapy has become a normal way to get support, especially for people in busy cities or living abroad. A common worry is whether it can really work through a screen.
What research suggests
Studies of video-based therapy, particularly for anxiety, depression and CBT-based work, have generally found outcomes comparable to in-person sessions for many people. The strength of your relationship with your therapist matters more than the format.
Who online therapy suits
People with busy schedules, those who prefer to talk from home, overseas Pakistanis who want a therapist who understands their culture, and anyone for whom travel is a barrier.
When in-person may be better
Some people simply concentrate better face to face, or do not have a private space at home. Severe crises need in-person or emergency support.
Preparing for your first session
Choose a quiet, private spot. Check your internet connection and use headphones. Keep a glass of water and a notebook nearby. Give yourself ten minutes before and after the session so you are not rushing in or out.
Natalia offers both online and in-person sessions. You can book through the booking page and choose whichever format feels right.
