Narcissistic Abuse: Signs You're Experiencing It and How Recovery Begins
By Natalia Salam, Clinical Psychologist · 2026-10-21
Narcissistic abuse is rarely loud at the start. It often looks like charm, then slowly turns into control, criticism and confusion. Many people only realise what was happening long after they have started doubting themselves.
Common signs
You apologise for things that were not your fault. You second-guess your memory because your version of events is always dismissed. You feel anxious before conversations, and you have slowly stopped seeing friends or family. Your needs are called 'too much' or 'dramatic'.
Why it is so hard to leave
Cycles of kindness and cruelty create a strong emotional bond. Hope for the 'good' version of the person keeps you waiting. This is not weakness. It is how the human attachment system responds to inconsistent treatment.
What recovery looks like
Healing usually starts with naming what happened and rebuilding trust in your own perception. From there, work focuses on boundaries, self-worth, and processing the emotional memories that still trigger you. This takes time, and it does happen.
Small first steps
Write down what happened in your own words, so your memory has an anchor. Reconnect with one safe person. Notice, without judging, how your body feels around the person who hurt you.
If you are not safe, please contact local emergency services or a trusted person right away. This article is general information and not a diagnosis. Support from a qualified professional can make the path clearer.
