Psychologist, Psychiatrist or Counsellor in Pakistan: Who Should You See?

By Natalia Salam, Clinical Psychologist · 2026-10-25

Many people in Pakistan put off getting help because they are not sure who to go to. The three titles sound similar, but the training and the type of help differ.

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialised in mental health. They can diagnose conditions and prescribe medication. Many people see one when symptoms are severe, or when they think medication could help.

Clinical psychologist

A clinical psychologist is trained in assessing emotional and behavioural difficulties and in talking therapies such as CBT. They do not prescribe medication. They help you understand your patterns and build skills to change them.

Counsellor

Counsellors usually offer supportive talking sessions for everyday struggles such as stress, relationships or life changes. Training and standards vary, so it is reasonable to ask about qualifications and experience.

How to choose

If you feel overwhelmed but are not sure why, or you want to work on thoughts, habits or past experiences, a clinical psychologist is a good place to start. If you are struggling to function, or have thoughts of harming yourself, see a doctor or psychiatrist urgently. Many people do well with both working together.

Ask before you book

Ask about training, the approaches used, how sessions run, and what happens if you need a different kind of care. A good professional will tell you honestly if someone else is better placed to help.

If you are in Lahore, or want online sessions from anywhere, you can book a first session with Natalia or send a message to ask a question first.
